Week 12 - *Board Games*

Reading/ watching the content this week, I found some very interesting ideas I want to recreate as we start working on our board game project. For the brainstorming assignment we completed, I found one box art from the given list that stood out to me. It had a picture of a castle and was titled 'Northern Regalia.' This theme of medieval times/society/war has always stood out to me and instantly grabs my attention when I'm looking for new games to play. I even drew up a sketch of how the board might look! One concept from the video 'How Board Games Matter' that I want to incorporate into our board game is 'Pre-Luck' as opposed to 'Post-Luck'. I loved how the speaker explained these concepts as Pre-luck is when "luck creates a situation from which the player then reacts" and Post-luck "involves the player making a decision and then a random event determines the outcome." I agree with his statements afterward as well where he essentially states that pre-luck is typically more "engaging" and the player gets to think through their actions, adapt, and make the best of their situation, whereas post-luck tends to make the player feel as though luck solely determines the outcome of their strategy. I want whatever game we create in this class to incorporate pre-luck so that the players feel more immersed and engaged with the gameplay, and feel like their decisions matter.

Overall, luck is typically part of nearly every game there is, but how you allow luck to affect the players is what will determine how much the players feel in control of their actions.
